Male of Female Carpintis?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Can't edit, but here's when I first got him/her - a bit lighter in color then. Also, I know the glass is dirty, was right before my WC day so the glass gets a tad gunky from the cats. And yes, on the 2nd pic that's a yoyo loach dive bombing into the base of a fake plant to get a little tid bit of food.

Great looking fish and tank.

Usually with this species, females have a black blotch in their dorsal (that is somewhat apparent in this first pic)

but as everyone else said, venting is the only 100% way of telling.

Thanks all for the responses, I'm going to have to hold off on venting as that would require taking my entire tank apart just trying to catch him/her. As s/he grows up will all the males develop a hump? If so that's something I will be watching for.

I'm hoping it's a she - would make my tank mostly female.

When I had a male Texas,he actually grew a hump on the head since he was 5 in half inches.Someone has told me though that not all males will grow a hump actually. As for the black blotch is one way of identifying cichlids as females, but that is also not true with Texas cichlids it seems. Some cichlids are easier to ID,while others are hard to tell, unless you vent them.

Texas (H. cyanoguttatus) and H. carpintis are 2 different fish. This is H. carpintis. Male cyanoguttatus almost always grow nuchal humps, carpintis not nearly as much...and actually its rare to see a carpintis with a largely pronounced one. Theyre out there, but hardly.

Another example of why common names are misleading/confusing. 2 different fish.

thats a beautiful fish! Where in MN did you get that fish from? Reminds me of some others I had a while ago. I assume its a female, but could be wrong.
