I’m leaning towards male, but at certain times there is a lot of blue bearding.

Looks really young so it could be a female that still isnt showing full color. That pic says more male than female but you say yourself that it does have some blue beard at times. Give it a few weeks and see how it looks.

Ok, I have had him since November and he is about 2-3 inches. What size should I expect him to show adult coloration (and aggression)?

I got him at about half an inch, if that makes a difference

Even if he was half an inch still sounds like a very slow grower. I have read that jd are slow growers but my male I bought at 1.5 - 2” and at a year he was a solid 8.5” - 9”. Hes pushing 9.5” - 10” right now at 14 months. He slowed down at the year mark in growth. I would expect a jd bought at 1/2” to be at least 6” at a year if not bigger.
I am not saying somethings wrong but even the pic you posted looks like a fish thats only a few months old. The ratio of the size of your fishes eye to its head looks like a very young fish not one thats almost a year old. Its almost as if the fish just stopped growing at 3 months. What size tank is the fish in and what other fish are in the tank?

It is in 60 gallons with a bp, sev, con, and banded leporinus. Biggest cichlid is the severum at 5 inches, the lep is much older and 8 inches. I’m aware that as they get bigger, this is quite overstocked, and would like to upgrade or move things around when I can do so.
