Hi all,
Can anyone help me.
I can not tell male or female on my elc yellows. And how big do they get till they start breeding.

It's VERY hard to tell them apart unless you have wild caught specimens. Yellow labs are one of the most inbred and commercialized of all the cichlids so the gender lines get blurred. Normally the ones with the most black are typically male but that doesn't always work nowadays. They can start breeding at about 3 inches but that's also debatable. The anal fin should be more pointed on the males and more rounded on the females but that isn't always surefire. The best way to get males and females is to put a bunch in the tank and just wait until some of them start spawning. Also be sure you get them from different mothers or you'll just add to the already overly inbred populations. JMHO, hope that helps.

Your male tends to have more black in the fins. They can also develop a darkening on the face when mature.
The surest way to tell is to get them vented. Need fish of 2-3in for best results. Males have two very small holes and the female has a small and a larger hole. Clearly visible when the fish are nearly at breeding size. If in doubt then use a magnifying glass to help.
Hope to get some wild caughts soon. Cost a packet compared to other wild caught mbuna.

Like said above, they have more black on the anal fin, the male also will grow larger than the females and be a little more aggressive.
