Males are generally more colourful then female with some females appearing dry dark especially during breeding. However there are some exceptions and I've seen on here pictures of dominant females that appear as colourful as any male and even with a slight nuchal hump. I have to disagree 100% that bearding doesn't help sex as I've had 6 females in the last year 3 of which has laid eggs all had the same bearding as the one pictures above. I'm not saying every single case is the same but beardin is definitely an easy and common difference to find between male and female saums.
