will post pictures soon, have to figure out how to do it.

Let me describe jack Dempsey, it's about two and half inches big, by an inch from bottom to top.
It has little light blue dots running from the face to the tail, dots are darker on the the head. Body is white has light black stripes like a convict fish. It has other characteristics but these are the ones that stick out when you first look at it.

Thanks
Stephen

The best way to determine sex in JDs, is the color on the lower jaw.
If there is a lot of blue (a blue beard) it may be female, a normal non-blue jaw is male.
The other characteristics mentioned are not relevant.
But a photo can really help, especially a clear shot of the lower jaw area.
But....if it is a line bred type (EB.....) all the above may not be helpful.

Looks male to me from the angle of the shots, because I don't see a splotch of blue hue on the lower jaw.
To be sure, and shot with it swimming toward the surface with the under jaw exposed would help.

Looks male to me. This is my female in breeding dress to give you an example of what is meant by blue bearding.

wow my fish is nothing like that, he has three or four blue dots on his bottom jaw.
Thank you for all your help everyone, thanks for foto Rob, and very beautiful fish.

Does anyone know roughly how old my fish could be, now I know its male?
thank you
Stephen

Two and one half inches long ... maybe 4-6 months? It depends on the water conditions he came from. If you keep the water changed in this tank he can grow a lot still.

Thanks Mike,
From the info I got from the internet the fish could've been between 3 to 8 months.
Probably based on bad water conditions, this narrow it don't a lot.
Thanks again.
Stephen
