How big are they? It is really hard to tell until the get nearly full grown. IME a sloping forehead/hump is pretty much the best way to tell. I didn’t know until this one hit 11”.
A steeper profile forehead normally indicates a male, if you have a group of six inch plus you can normally see the difference, very hard with a solo fish.
There are subtitles you as their keeper may notice as time goes by, but its very early in their development so far. (like the above mentioned steeper profile in males)
It looks like they are instinctually matching the color of the substrate (or maybe its just the lighting), masking color differences.
