I will be picking up a male JD shortly, and I wanted to get him a female to keep him company because I don't want him to be in a tank alone. So I purchased this one at the LFS for $30.

I am convinced it's a female because it has a lot less spangles than males typically do, and the one I am getting is more of a blue, and I have read that that's a sign of it being a male.

It does have the anal fin like the male I think, but it's not very long.

She is about 7 inches.

I need to know because I don't want to put the male in the tank with her if she's really a he.

She's in the QT tank right now.

$30 :WHOA:??? i got a breeding pair for $ 14 :headbang2about 5 inches.

That's a female JD :). You'll have to post pics of the male...bluer coloration won't necessarily mean its a male.

The Male JD I will post pics of when I get him.

He's from one of the mods here, so I can trust that he's really a he. lol.

So awesome I finally sexed a fish correctly. :headbang2

I got her from Petz Unlimited. That's the ONLY place I will get my fish. Yeah, the service sucks, but the fish are better that anywhere else IMO.

There's also Petco now...

The best way to sex a JD, is to look at the Gill plate. Females will have more blue on the gill plate then the male. Longer fins doesn't necessarily tell you the sex of the jd's. But, yes, your JD is a female.

Another question here... Can only 2 Jd's be in a tank together?

I have 3 small- 2 inch JD's and I was wondering if they could all live together? They are too big to be eaten. The small ones are together now, but can they go in with the big ones?

I am not trying to disagree with any one but I was told by a guy who breeds JDs that females had solid blue on the gill plates not spangles. Is that correct?
