Help me decide on male of female please? Very soon i plan on purchasing my first ray. Ive done a lot of research, but the only thing i havent really read on is the difference of male and female. I know the females usually outgrow the males. That doesnt matter to me. And i also do not plan on breeding anytime soon. Do the males look different than the females? I have noticed sum have on the back end on the sides of the stinger they have like lil flaps?? Sorry not sure wut they r called?

They do not look any different except for when the claspers start to stick out. Females are probably a little thicker if anything. With all the rays I have kept the males tend to swim a lot more than the females. By swim I mean up and down the sides of the tank and even float down to the bottom like a ufo.

buy a female first.

then when you can, buy another pair. if you cant afford another pair just get one male.

best case scenario you will have 2females and one male.
2nd best: 1 pair, with a female that is hopefully close to breeding.
worst case, 1 female.

thats my 2 cents..

i find that most male rays have better markings than female

Males usually always seem to look nicer and of the rays that have died on me, all have been female.

interesting, it's the opposite for me. my female is way more active, curious and involved than my male is.
she is constantly swimming all over the tank while he generally stays around the substrate.
