not really much of a flowerhorn kinda guy. a friend of mine gave me his. i didn't want it but, my mom really likes him/her. just curious on gender identification. i'm guessing it's a female since there's no head? i could be wrong since i have little to no knowledge of FH's.

"Colors and body patterns are becoming more distinctive. . Distinctive black marking on the dorsal fin indicates that it is a female. However, this is not foolproof. The same pattern does exist on some male Flowerhorns.. Observations on the shape of the genital papillae. V-shaped papilla indicates a male fish, while a U-shaped papilla indicates a female fish. Gently squeezing the abdominal region may reveal the papillae.. Male Flowerhorns will have broader body with higher dorsal, anal and caudal fins. It is also observed that male Flowerhorns will have thicker jawline and more distinctive body color.
5 months and above(150 mm - 600 mm) "

FOUND THIS ON A WEBSITE...hope it helps

Yes, it does have a head-lol, but not much of a kok. It is a very nice fish though.I would keep it and see what t blossoms into, as they can do a lot of changing.

Judging by the general chunkiness of the head, and the body shape, I would guess its a male. Females generally have more "delicate" features. the fish defo needs feeding up though. It is undernourished. Stomach is concave. May even have gut parasites.

Overall, it could be a nice ZZ though. Pattern and pearling seems nice.

His penis is resting against your pinky..... Theres your first clue :D

ZZ based flowerhorn. Not awful in quality. Decent flowerline, but you do need to fatten him up.

i guess that's why he was so calm when i took the picture? haha

as for the malnourishment, it's been a problem lately. i have grand sumo for him to eat but he's been rejecting it for like the past 3 weeks. his water parameters are fine 82 degrees nitrates 0 ammonia 0. could he possibly have a stomach parasite? what could i do to get rid of them? i'm not much of a flowerhorn kinda guy but, that doesn't mean i want him to suffer.

any suggestions?

Grand sumo is an enhancer food and should be used sparingly. You want his diet to be a high quality pellet as a staple. Hikari gold or any NLS for example. Enhancers foods work better 3-4 times a week than at every feeder because the fish dont particularly enjoy eating it, But it is good for enhancing.

Go to a LFS or petsmart and get some bloodworms. If he rejects them your might be looking as some parasites or something internally. Diversity in foods will really help him take more foods more eagerly than if fed a high concentrated food like grand sumo all the time.

i would've never guessed it was just for occasional feeding. i assumed it was just expensive high quality FH food.

should frozen blood worms do for now? I'm going to try some of that hikari cichlid gold and see if he likes it. kinda feel bad now since i haven't tried any other alternatives and just kept trying to force him to eat the sumo ..

time to stuff this bad boy and see what he turns into!

Frozen bloodworm is perfect. Do NOT feed live bloodworm from your LFS, they will most likely be full of parasites.
Again. like the enhancer foods, bloodworm should not be used as a staple diet but as a treat. Hikari gold or NLS, or something similar is perfect as staple diet.
