male or female?

Africans tend to be very sexually dismorphic with the males and females looking nothing like each other, though it depends on the species. Oscars not so much. To sex an Oscar you would need a fairly large one and the ability to vent it. Or pop a couple in a tank and watch for mating activity.
Well then, nice and easy to sex. Male is blue, female is a splotchy orange and black:
