Male or female?

hey i was recently wondering what sex my Jack Dempsy is and finally saw him / her color up today and got a few not so good pics so if anyone can help

Not 100% certain, but I'd be willing to bet that is a female.

When I got it at like 2" it was a dark color like it is now. If I wanted to get another should I get a light one?

i also not 100% sure either, unless u got a closer look at if face, especaily the mouth&"chest"area. but i would also say from what i see that it is female as well.

as you can see here clearly the differences. easiest way i know of to tell. gl.

I have a JD just like yours, and i'd be willing to bet yours is a female as well.

Mosdefenate, yes on gill area. those pics are my JD pair. only 2 other ways i know of is venting, and if it lays eggs sometimes female CA/SA cichlids will "drop" eggs as if they were spawing by themselves.

the easiest way to tell a male or female dempsey is by the gill plates males jewels do not go all the way down while females do
