What do youguys think about having 4 or 5 male rays together with no females?I know that male rays can be real hard on females and sometimes kill them when sexually mature.Has anyone ever had male rays beat up on eachother or kill eachother with no females in the picture?

Bad Idea. When they get mature they will fight and probably kill eachother.

Is this based on experience or assumption?

You may or may not have aggression. Depends on the rays. I had to separate and ended up selling a couple choice male rays for beating up on other male rays, and other non-matured females. I have also heard of females being aggressive toward other male or female rays. I've also seen several rays of both sexes live peacefully among each other with just an occasional nip here and there. Just depends on the ray IMO.

I've noticed alot of times with fish that are aggressive towards their own species it helps to have say 5 or 6 instead of 2 or 3. Does that apply to rays too? What do youguys reccommend on mixing different sizes?Would it be alright to mix a couple 10 to 12 inchers with a 16 incher? Or is it better to keep a couple females in your community.

How big is the tank/pond? They need plenty of room if you don't want aggresion issues. 6 rays is a healthy footprint.

public aquarium that my friend works at had 6 male motoros in a 2000 gallon tank. after they became mature the agression reached the point where all but 1 of the males had to be rehomed . one by one they attacked each other and it didnt matter which you removed, the dominance transfered to another!

this is an extreme case i have had tanks much smaller with three mature males and no problems.

as already stated every ray is different so just be prepared to separate if necessary.

Totally agree with this !

I have had many males living peacefully togethor in the past, but you only have to drop the wrong male in and all hell will let loose,i certainly wouldn't have larger males with smaller ones, they will easilly kill, you will always be better off with more females than males.if you are going for 5 why not have 2 males and 3 females?..a much bettor mix.
