My 2in male red zebra (he's actually a blue stiped morph) has started to get really hyper. He used to be very lay back, but now he is always in full color, fins extended chasing a lot of his tank mates around.

He has also taken to confining the female red zebra to one rock pile. Every time she pokes her head out, he chases her back in. He only lets her out to feed and then once all the food is gone, he chases her back again.

Is this some sort of pre-spawning courtship (they are both around 2 - 2 1/4 in long)? Or is he just getting an attitude?

chasing and attacking are two different things. which is more accurate?
BTW: my Africans chase all day with no damage ever done.

Good point, this is just chasing. Usually a quick dart to make a fish change direction and take off. He never bites the female, just stares her down until she retreats to the cave.

all my cichlids chase each other and dart across the tank.. but no one ever gets hurt or worse and they have all been together 2 years..infact all the cichlids in all my tanks do this.. so as long as thats all thats going on ..or that he is not stressing one piticular fish to the point where they are not behaving normal..coming out for food etc..then all should be okay as long as they are in the right size environment and the right amount of cichlids for that environment.
