So I wanted to set up a central/South American cichlid tank and wanted to know what would be better for a tank with other cichlids a male or female I’ve heard that females can be pretty nasty but haven’t heard about males anybody have experience

The female Festae is smaller & more colorful than the male. I've successfully kept a female Festae in a 120 gal. tank with a male Rivulatus and a group of Silver Dollars with no real aggression problem.
IMO, the males are awsome too, they just grow much larger & are more likely to eat smaller tankmates. Lol. Territorial aggression depends largely on the individual fish and the variety of tankmates its kept with.

Wow your female is beautiful was the rivulatus male or female I was going to put one in a 200 gallon with

Both can be pretty aggressive.
A pair will eliminate anything that threatens their breeding territory and fry. Expect in the largest of systems.
In general they will get along with other species better than other Festae.

My Rivulatus was a big male. He actually murdered an adult male JD tankmate.
I've never kept a Red Istlanis, so not sure of its temperament.

I will add that in general, Festae are what I would consider only average in aggression compared to other cichlids.
Where they become truly mean would be as a pair and with fry.

The stronger female would likely color up. The subordinate female would probably be colored a drab brown.
One would become dominant. The other would probably survive if the tank has other fish to spread the aggressive behavior out.
But may get picked on to the point of death.
Festae are notoriously hard on conspecific.
