There has been good threads on the max sizes that the different bichers will attain.
My question is which get larger... the males or the females.

Thanks

Females tend to be slightly larger than the males-Anne

Anne, I'm curious as to where you found scientific data to support that statement? I can understand females maybe being heavier ( because of carrying eggs), but unless a control group of say a dozen from the same hatch is reared to maturity under exact conditions, I would be slow to make that generalization! I would love to see some data, rather than just experiences with bichirs with no known ages! NOT meaning to sound abrupt, but I know how little actual technical information is out there on these fishes. Johnathan:)

There is no scientific data my information comes from keepers who have or had both males and females.
I'd love to see scientific data on a few subjects dealing with Polypterids however its just not out there or theres a lot of scientific data not available without subscriptions to various medical/scientific journals-Anne

The reason I poised the question is because some fish family's have quite a distiction in sizes between the genders.
Most large freshwater gamefish for example are females, pike, walleye, largemouth bass.
Pike for example, males seldom get over 10lbs where as females can get upwards of 20 and even 30lbs.
I had read that this allowed for greater production of eggs, to contrast this I have heard some species have the males larger which allowed for protection of territories...African cichlids perhaps??

I was just curious how the bichers tended to go.

I suspect that Anne may very well be right, but I'd feel alittle better with actual data, rather than just anecdotal observations! I had a breeding pair of ornates (female 22"-male 17"), but I just assumed the female was older! Guess we won't know for sure until someone does the work! Here's another question for bichir experts out there;" Does anybody know the sex ratio of newly hatched bichirs?" I have five large P.endi.endi ranging in size from 14"-18", from five different sources, and they appear to all be females! Just made me wonder what was everyone else's experiences as to sex ratios of what they're keeping? Johnathan:D
