Sexual dimorphism is not very evident in Paratheraps fenestratus, like most Paratheraps species. These fish are very hard to sex, if not impossible until they do something like lay eggs. I have a nice female that I originally thought was a male. I got a male yesterday, and the female beat him up so badly that he will likely die within the next few hours. I'm out a bunch of money and I'm pissed at myself for not being more careful. Lesson learned. The female is quite nice however, and I may keep her unless someone buys her.

Can a female of any of the Paratheraps species look as nice and have as much potential as a male of the same species? Maybe not a fair question, but can a female of show quality be produced? I generally keep all males, and they tend to get bigger and in some species the males are more colorful. Can a female fenny get big and colorful like a male fenny. I
know she probably won't have a hump. Is there a difference in personality?

Wow man tough lesson to learn... Im the same as you, I always keep just males. From my experience males always have "better" coloration/markings. I do believe that a female can look beautiful but in a female cichlid way. Not as a male!

I would think if one new what and how to breed specifically for stronger lineage you could produce the "perfect" female. You would need to know what to do and what to use and so on... Even then, I don't think it would be compairable to a male?..

I do not know if this is possible with female Fens. You'r right about he smaller nuchal too. That is a "guy thing"! LOL

Some of the smart techy fish guys will chime in.

Thanks. Anyone else.

Actually it was what I wanted to hear, I just didn't have any comments to add to what you said. I feel the same way you do, I just want some different opinions. I guess my reply was a little short.;)

LOL. I too want some others to chime in here cause Im sure someone can answer better.

Come on you experts! :D

darth here's a pic of my female from a while ago, been a while since i took any pics of them, and below a pic of the male and female together to give you an idea of how different they look together, top pic was taken with flash and bottom w/o, IMO the female can look just as good as a male

Yep. Thanks there. You have some nice fennys. I detect some black in the dorsal of your female fenny, and I see the same in mine. I wonder if it can be used to sex them like with trimacs or texas cichlids?

possibly, the male has some black too but not as distinct as the females, my male is way taller bodied though too, but after a certain size u can just vent them :D
