my LFS said that males have a longer lower jaw that sticks out and females don't is this true? i have 2 silvers and one has a longer lower jaw and one doesn't

i don't know, but i sure as hell wanna know!! i heard it was to do with the appendages on the lower mouth. no idea though.

Can anyone help this MFK!

While there are indicators such as the lower jaw, or long anal fin, or plumper size, these are not 100% dimorphic. A female can have the same jaw, or a long anal fin. The only way to tell is to wait until they pair.

this is true the only for sure way to sex besides disection is to actually witness mating or to see the dad holding the eggs or hatched fry in his mouth.. being that aros are mouthbrooders and the male holds the eggs and the fry

now here is an interesting thread. around here people say that males have larger pectoral ( not sure that is what they are called in english , i mean the ones that hang down from the underbody ) fins...

The only guaranteed method to sexing silver aros is the actual breeding. If only one of the adults is holding fry/eggs then it is the male, if both are, the one with few eggs/fry is the female.

If you have just one and it's a female, won't she lay eggs regardless of a male there to fertilize them?

this could be true, but the only case ive seen this in is delgado. i never seen any other case that has done it. but then again i haven't been around these forums long enough. if u go by your statement, that would mean any silver that doesn't lay eggs would be considered a male?
