A 19-year-old Alexandria college student is facing two counts of mistreatment of an animal and one count of felony burglary in the second degree following an incident that took place last Wednesday.
On April 23, Alexandria police officers arrested Ryan Lee Larsen, who is originally from Roseau, in connection with a cat being stabbed to death and a reported burglary at an apartment at 1816 Fillmore Street in Alexandria.

The two female tenants who lived in the apartment were not home at the time of the incident.
According to the police report, the two females arrived home to find their door standing open, the apartment in disarray and what appeared to be blood splattered in different areas throughout the apartment.
During the investigation, the family pet was found mutilated and deceased inside the apartment. It died from multiple stab wounds, according to police report.
Further investigation led to Larsen’s arrest. He remained in the Douglas County Jail until Tuesday morning when he posted bail of $5,000 cash.
Two other male suspects were with Larsen at the time of the incident. Authorities are still investigating their involvement.
According to the criminal complaint filed with Douglas County District Court, here’s what happened:
Shortly before 10 a.m. last Wednesday, an officer was dispatched to 1816 Fillmore Street, apartment 203 for a reported burglary.
The officer spoke with the two tenants, who reported that they had been away from their apartment from about 1 a.m. until 9 a.m. on April 23.
When the two females arrived home, they found the door open, the apartment in disarray and their cat missing.
Another officer arrived on scene and the two officers looked around the apartment and questioned the two females, asking if they had recent contact with former boyfriends or new acquaintances.
Officers found out that the two females had met Larsen and two of his friends – all of whom were college students – about a week before.
In the early morning hours of April 23, the three males reportedly went to the apartment of the two females for a party.
The three suspects didn’t stay long, about 20 minutes, as the two females had prior arrangements to go to another friend’s house to stay overnight.
The two females told the officers that the three male suspects appeared to be upset that they did not want to stay and party with them.
After speaking with the tenants, the two Alexandria police officers continued their inspection of the apartment.
They found the remains of an orange cat in a back bedroom.
A kitchen knife was found in the center of the back bedroom on the floor.
When the officers were finished speaking with the tenants and inspecting the apartment, they located the suspects.
When questioning Larsen, the officers said he appeared to be nervous and evasive in his answers to their questions.
Eventually, Larsen admitted to going to the apartment and killing the cat, according to the complaint.
Larsen told officers that he and the other two suspects had been drinking vodka before going over to the apartment and that he and the other two suspects thought they were all going to party together.
Larsen told officers that when he and the other two suspects went back to the apartment – about five or 10 minutes after the two females had left – he entered the apartment, saw the cat, went to the kitchen to get a knife and attempted to chase the cat with the intention of harming it or killing it, according to the criminal complaint.
He said his two friends stood by the door and had nothing to do with killing the cat.
The criminal complaint stated that when Larsen was making his statement to officers, he was “emotional throughout and that he expressed that he was sorry for what had happened and that he had never done anything so stupid in his entire life.”
