Austin Police have charged Andrew Owens, 25, with cruelty to animals after they say he ran over a dog while the dogs owners were walking it. Police say Owens was driving his vehicle under the influence of Xanax.
Police say a man and a woman were walking their 10-year-old Siberian Husky Pearl along Austin Park Lane on Monday evening. The woman told police that she was walking approximately twenty feet behind her husband and Pearl when she saw a white car swerve towards the two. Her husband was able to move out of the way but the car hit Pearl.
The male owner of the dog told police that after the car hit Pearl, it swerved back onto the road speed away.
The owners of Pearl took her to an emergency veterinary clinic and called police.
Police searched the area and located a vehicle that matched the description provided by witnesses in the area of the incident. The car was stopped for an unrelated traffic stop. Police say that before the officer could question the driver, Owens, he made a statement saying he did not know what happened in the accident. Police say that the vehicle he was driving had a dent in the bumper.
Police then questioned Owens about the dent in his car. Officers say that Owens admitted to hitting something during the accident but not knowing what it was. Police say Owens also admitted to taking a Xanax about two or three hours before the accident.
Pearl suffered multiple fractured ribs, lacerations to her legs, and a collapsed lung. On Tuesday Pearl died from her injuries.
Owens was charged with cruelty to animals, which is a state jail felony.
