man takes snake for walk, goes to jail

Ok, that's the biggest load of bull I've ever heard.
Is that species illegal in that area? if not there's no reason that man should have been arrested.
I don't go parading around with my snakes, but if I were arrested by having mine outside on the grass on a nice sunny day for "putting the public at risk from dangerous wildlife" You BET I'd be raising hell about it.
And he was walking along a ROAD, not like he was in a school yard putting the snake around little kid's necks or something stupid like that. YES, cause the snake is TOTALLY GONNA ATTACK a passing vehicle and ZOMG STRANGLE them!
Give me a freaking break.

*edit* didn't realize it was in NY until I reread it. I realize that burms are illegal in NY.

That was kind of dumb of him. I mean, why would you walk down a highway with a giant tropical and -illegal- snake unless you were trying to get people riled up?

And what's worse is that this is the kind of jackassery that ends up influencing public views of herpetoculture. I do think people should be able to keep giant snakes even in places where they have been banned, but for God's sake, be responsible and don't make a scene out of it.

Heh.. here... officers can charge a person for disturbing the peace if they decide to take an exotic pet for a walk.

Seriously though... not everyone like snakes, nor do everyone want to see them paraded around in public. My own mom is afraid of snakes because some guy didn't control his boa while parading it in public back in the '60s or '70s.

completely agree. Getting caught with an illegal snake in a public place... just another blow for NY herpers.

Did this happen recently? I mean it's been pretty damn cold here (hello, it is winter) and I'd be afraid of getting my tropical snake sick by taking it out doors when it's 30˚ to 40˚ degrees out. What an idiot.

That was my thought. It says Tuesday so I assume this past TUesday (the 15th). The public danger thing is BS but honestly the animal cruelty charge is more than legit.

There was a guy locally here that used to walk a larger snake around in the summer. I agree though, shouldn't take illegal pets out in public..
