This weekend I purchased a 6 inch Managuense and added it to a 125 with several other fish (midas, festae, carpintis, trimac & RTM). With what I already knew and about 6 or 7 hrs research on MFK & the internet, I still cant find an answer to my question, which is:

Do Managuense swim or post up vertically often?

This one either has something wrong with it, or its watching the dannios skimming across the top of my tank (or the bubbles...it loves them). I have watched it go completely vertical in a plant, using the plant for cover Im assuming, then lunge after any smaller fish going by. Is this all that it is...stalking?Hunting? Im worried that the shock of the trip, the cold weather or just something genetically might be causing it.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

If he swims normally at other times and just does this when going after smaller fish i would say its a predatory behavior. I have a Jag and have never seen this however he's lightning quick when he goes after the occassional feeder.

It is most likely pred behavior as cichlid savage said. My Dovii will do that all day long with bubbles on the surface.Hence I don't keep an air stone in his tank and only rely on water movement to air rate his water.
If you are worried, try removing the dannios and turn of the air pump for a while so there is no bubbles on the surface and see if his behavior changes.

Excellent idea I concur!

My 9" Male does the same thing from time to time, I think it's just laziness by just using the two side fins instead of the rear.

Ok, thats what I figured. She is still unsuccessful in catching any of the fish and wont eat ANYTHING else Ive tried to give her. Im guessing the guy I got her from fed her live fish because the minute I put anything in there for her to eat she ignores it and continues to try and catch the dannios.

I guess shell be losing a few ounces of weight before she figures out shes not getting feeders.

Thanks for the replies.
