I have had this little guy for approximately 6 months and he won’t grow. He had stayed approximately 3”. His color is also very unique. He mostly stays pitch black and sometimes gets pale, depending on mood. Rarely will he have the typical jaguar blotching in his gills. I have had full adult jags in the past, but never one like this... Any suggestions?

When I had a pair of managuense back in the 80s, (that regularly spawned), out of each spawn, there would be a half dozen or so that had that subdued coloration.
Many cichlids will have a few "out of the ordinary" colored individuals in a spawn.
It is thought that just in case of a change in topography thru some natural event, this change in coloration might help the continuation of the species if natural coloration became detrimental.

As for his size will he stay on the smaller end of the spectrum?

Mine grew to the same size as the parents.
Strange... I would even say 3” is pushing it... more accurate would be somewhere between 2-3”. We bought a Dovii the same time and he is going on 6”. Just concerning since I have had jags in the past get adult size and he doesn’t grow. Thanks for the reply though!

I would mark up his/her color to stress. Same may be said for growth, even if a female should be around the 5 inch mark in 6 months.
