i just had an idea.

would it be possible for me to buy a mangrove, put it in some sort of medium, and plant it in my HOB filter, with a light over it, to help remove phosphates and nitrates from my sw tank?

why?

that i think is the best question and if for some reason you were adament about doing it your best bet would be to build a sump

but why not just plant the plant in the aquarium?

i mean +10 points for style minus a few million for good thinking

lol yes people have been using them for years. people call them refugiums or plant filters.

a hob filter is no different then any other plant filter as it just channels water through it.

right now on my fresh water tank i have lucky bamboo in the hob filter.

down side to mangroves, they grow very slow and dont remove much waste until they get tree sized.

I actually just came home with a phosban reactor. Cant wait to set this thing up.... Its gonna work wonders!

Sounds like a good idea, is their another plant that removes nitrates faster than a mangrove plant. Post pics when your done.

fuge's are excellent sources of bad nutrient removers, Phosphate reactors too. BUT the BEST way to control phosphates is to find your source of it ask your self these questions to solve the issue. ( Is there dead zones in my tank where excess food, debris, or detritus accumulates?) ( When I feed frozen food do I thaw it out in a separate container only to dump that water in the tank? ( Do I have 1 snail per gallon to control algae, excess foods, detritus?) This will ultimately save you time, money, and most importantly aggravation.

Hey thanks Mr. reef, good information! I am setting up a 30 gallon SW tank here in the next 2 weeks. First saltwater tank in YEARS . HAHA I know I still got it.

I am just trying to get all the best technique's so I get a good layout and make a great tank the first time.
