I have a 125 that I am using as a brackish tank for diamond killies, sheep's head minnows and possibly Indian dwarf mudskippers. I might change the species of mudskippers.

I have sand and I believe argonite mixed together to keep the PH staple. If mangrove plants are used do I still need to stir the sandy mix to eliminate the pockets of ammonia or will the roots take care of this for me?

Well, when you stir, it's not to remove pockets of ammonia. Do you have a deep sand bed (greater than or equal to 4 inches?)

Depending on the specifics, there are different answers for you. :)

I would still stir the substrate. How do you plan on rooting the trees? To rocks or driftwood just in the water (that's what I would do, if I had baby propagules to work with.)

What happens in the substrate is anaerobic bacteria form, from the lack of oxygen in the sand. This anaerobic bacteria has a byproduct of hydrogen sulfide that is water soluble and toxic to fish.

I would siphon the dirt/poop from the top layer of the sand, and after doing so, then stir the sand to prevent pockets of toxic gas building up.

Would be easier to have a thin 1 inch of sand mix? The mangroves are going to be placed directly in the water and sand mix. As well as in damp sand mix above water level. Mangroves are going to be everywhere.
is this in your sump tank,or inside the tank., what species are u planting?
i was thinking figi mud or the mirical mudd?

any update on the mangroves? i just ordered me some today...i have a 40 gal brackish tank that houses red clawed crabs and soon indian mudskippers...i also have some guppies in there...the tank is fresh water right now because the pet store had them in fresh water so i gotta slowly acclimate them to brackish but im waiting on my refractometer to come. im finna post a build log of it so everybody can see it

You should consider a BW flounder to keep your sand stired for you. Mangroves will do great in BW and high PH. Having the roots submerged in sand easily triples the growth rate for me compared to being in a well lit sump or even HOB filter. GL :D
