I just bought a 24" by 34" "A" frame shape of Mangrove wood(lowers ph naturally). I am going to put it into my 450 gallon ray tank. It houses Rays,Armatus,Black arowana,Mbu puffer,Ripsaw catfish,Tigrinus cat and some Lenticulata pikes.

My question is..Due to the fact the wood is so big will it lower my ph too much for my fish? Didn't even think about the lowering of the ph when I bought the wood! I just needed to have that monster piece of wood!:screwy:

Doubt it'll do anything significant to your pH, especially in that size tank.

The biological filtration with your rays will almost certainly affect your pH before a piece of wood will and for that reason you're well advised to keep an eye on your pH regularly unless you know exactly how your water's buffering capacity holds your pH between water changes.

I wouldn't go changing the ph as it will only ever wander up and down due to water changes. Stick to the tap water and keep it simple.

Should look nice though. The wood may discolour the water for a while too.

I dont think you will have any problems. I have wood in my tank its not mangrove its mopani (or something like that). It will turn your tank a tan color untill the filter removes it. I would recommend filling the tub with hot water and letting it soak all day. The heat will help remove some of the tannins that discolor the water and keeping it in water will help the wood soak up some water so it will sink. It may float for a little while.

LOL, I still have this piece of wood with my rays. A little more algae on it but I still have it.

The odds of it doing a massive ph shift are slim to none. Just keep a eye on it and maybe a few extra smaller water changes if it starts to shift
