i found a preying mantids egg case at work in a christmass tree. i took it home and put it in a empty 10 gallon tank. how long will it take for the eggs to hatch. i only want to keep one, so ill release the rest somewere. do they need anything special???????

Well if you release them now they'll die outside. If you can wait till the spring to hatch them. Warm temperatures will speed up the development of the eggs. If you don't want them to hatch now, keep them cool and or outdoors in a sheltered area.

:duh: but its only 30 degrees. lol

You know what, I found one in my Christmas tree last week. I put the egg case outside next to my house in some bushes. When spring comes I'll have hundreds of the little guys running around on everything.

does it have little holes and cracks all over it if so they all ready hatched plus its pretty late in the season they lay egg sacks in the spring so i'd say its about a 98%-99% chance they hatched all ready but it would be cool to raise them

Actually, they lay their egg cases in the autumn. Well at least the 2 species we have in Pennsylvania do.

lol. i work with christmas trees at work. we find tons of them and put them in our shrubs to eat pest insects. i find like 3 a day. i should sell them:D

They make awesone pest controll.Whenever I find one I put it on one of my bonsai benches to take care of any little bugs that try to roam around on my trees! They are also cannibalistic and if left in a tank will eat each other till only one left.Warm weather will start the process of them hatching so leave out side till spring they can with stand extreme cold the foam egg case acts like insulation for the eggs.

Just drop it in a bag or box and place in cool to cold pluntil spring, such as your garage. In spring tie to a rosebush or other plant outside and wait till hatching.
