I've kept a few when I was a kid,now I'm happy enough just to happen upon an egg case to keep an eye on in my backyard.
I have never kept one indoors over winter though and I wonder just how long their lifespan is.

cooling temperatures and inquisitive children make it hard to say no when they bring you a mantis and ask can we keep it.
always one of my favorite insects to keep. they always adjust to captivity well.View attachment 1438822
My favorite also. Brung in a egg case and when the 200 or more so little mantis emerged I scattered them in different areas around my bushes and flower beds.

I always love watching them!
As for lifespan I’m pretty sure it’s only like 6 months to a year.

Though actually not insects those garden spiders are nice. They also turn up around my porch and yard from time to time. They also seem to have a knack for building their huge webs in the worst locations.

....few summers ago I came out one morning and there was a huge web spun between two of the pillars on my porch and spider's butt was as big as a golf ball.

Kind of reminds me of cross orb weavers. They look scary close to brown widows. Scared the crap out of me until I learned the differences. I’ve always wanted to keep a wood or wolf spider for a bit.
