Hey guys so I maybe ordering some Manzinita driftwood pretty soon for my 75g CA/SA cichlid tank. I am under the impression that manzinita will release tannins into my water which is fine, I dont really care about that. What I want to make sure of is does it do anything negative to my parameters? It lowers ph I assume but other than that what do they do?

Makes your water turn poopy brown. Can also just fill a bucket and presoak it like I am.

It may float for a little while, too, depending on it's density. We love the look of manzanita in a fish tank. We've got 3 fairly large pieces soaking in a bathtub, getting them ready to put in our 300 gallon South American community tank.

That seems to be it for typical lfs bought. It helps to boil to remove more of the tannins that gets released. Most also should not float.

I spent a small fortune on Manzanita for a 540 gallon. It all floated, and it stained the water a nasty reddish brown for 2 months. Purigen definitely pulls wood coloration right outta water, but you have to recharge it every 2 days.

when ii was working the fire lines in south cal, it was by far the hardest shrub to take down with a Blood hook, like chopping on iron.

Manzanita is a very dense and popular wood for aquaria. The tannins don't do anything but stain the water. I wouldn't worry about it unless you absolutely can't stand the discoloration. Soaking is by far the best way to season the wood.
