Can Maracyn 2 be used with Melafix, or do I have to finish using the maracyn 2 first? The reason that I am asking is I am treating my 120gal planted for fin and tail rot (that only seams to be affecting the guppys) with Maracyn 2 but don't have enough to finish treating for more than three days and there is none available where I live just in edmonton. Lots of Melafix in town but no Maracyn 2. Weird thing is the fin and tail rot is only effecting my guppys with the orange and black speckled fins and the ones with green fins, all other fish (mollys, playts, corys, clownloaches, chinese algie eater, simese algie eater), don't seem to be effected by the fin and tail rot. Lots of guppys have died but no other types of fish.

Yes it can be with no problems.

But I hope that you know that maracyn2 is a antibiotic. Antibiotics kill bacteria. This means that they will kill your beneficial bacteria (bio-filter) as well as the bacteria that is rotting the fins.

Antibiotics are very beneficial in curing many problems in fish but they should only be used in hospital tanks. And never in the main or show tank. For that reason.

You will also find that melafix will have little to no effect on true fin rot. But it can help to repair fins that have become tattered due to stress.

Please check your ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels, if you haven't yet done it. These problems are usually brought on by poor water quality, and so the treatment isn't going to be effective if the water quality is poor. Often, a little melafix or salt added to the main tank will cure these types of symptoms if water quality is remedied, and if it is good to start with, the problems won't occur. If you've already tested, would you mind posting your parameters?

As stated, do not use antibiotics in the main system. Be careful with a QT -- if it is not a cycled tank, it will only make your problems worse.
