I recently got in this beautiful 17" Marbled lungfish from a vendor and I am trying to figure out subspecies. I know it is wildcaught from the Democratic Republic of the Congo but not much else. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know if lungfish still have subspecies anymore... But I would say this is Protopterus aethiopicus congicus (if that's still valid). If I remember correctly aethiopicus aethiopicus are much rarer and come from likes Ethiopia/Lake Turkana/Lake Victoria/Lake Tanganyika? (I'm not 100% sure on that).

Yeah I figured it would be either
Protopterus aethiopicus congicus or Protopterus aethiopicus mesmaekersi

Haha I forgot mesmaekersi was a thing. Haven’t seen that name in over 10 years. To be honest never seen one for sale. Most likely the subspecies are invalid now similar to Polypterus. Since there probably isn’t a major difference between the “subspecies” likely just regional variants of the same species.
