curious on the size most marbles are mature. i have heard of some being 8.5-9" prego but what are everyones opinion on that and what would you say is the normal size for them to be showing movement?

Hey Jeffers, I recently picked up an 8.5" marble female WC and it is supposed to be preggo also, didn't know they but the seller saw movement

hey bravehart how well can you see the movement as well?

11" was what i was usually thinking but occasionally you see and hear some of these at around 9". and a 9" ray looks very small to be prego, but i believe it.

I have Marbles pushing 3 years old that are still not 10"s so I'm guessing it's possible, but after having a 12" female in with 3 mature males for over 6 months, I'm not even gonna get my hopes up till she's bigger.

I wouldn't stress over it too much, if you find pups you know she was preggo. I've had so many false alarms that unless I see more eyes then there's supposed to be I don't assume any are preggo, and I have 1.5' females with swollen hind quarters and 3" long pieces of disk missing. Still not enough for me to call them preggo. All I do is hope.

My female marble was mature at 11", the male at 8"

I had a friend that have a female marble around 9" that had pups before...

This one time at bandcamp.........

Lets see some pics people. Words don't hold a lot of weight in the day and age of internet.

I bet there's a direct relationship between quality and how big they must be before giving birth.... IF it takes nice ones longer to get big I would think they could get prego earlier.

However.... My ? is this- IS it really healthy for such a small ray to be preggo? Just cause it "can" get preggo doesn't mean it's the best thing for it. Look at humans they can get preggo real young but doesn't mean healthwise it's a good idea..... lol

Given that I'm the vendor mentioned, I should probably put my 2 cents in ;)

With Marble Motoro's in specific it is very common to see Males come in mature with fully rolled claspers in sizes as small as 6", more commonly at the 8" mark...well within the commonly imported size range (6"-12"). With females, how do you recognize maturity?

Usually these rays have been held down in SA for a period of time, where they are fed a minimum, that, and stress and they come in slender ..err atleast not very thick.

The recent batches of MM that have come in had 3 very thick girls (for exporting/importing standards) in there. Jeffers ray, which never even made it to posting had/has 2 very clear humps as we see in the hobby when Prego. The one for Bravehrt same. Jeffers ray looked Prego, and I'm sure I saw movement, all be it sporadic. The one for bravehrt you can clearly see almost constant movement (one would assume she's further along, as well as has settled in)...I'll shoot vid before she ships out. The third ray, which Is yet to be sold is simply thick. If she is pregnant, there is no movement. The only hint of it being a possibility is her girth. She is the only ray coming from SA that is thick as if a well fed captive ray.

I know of rays coming in pregnant and aborting from the stress of shipping...not too common, but not un-common.

Leads me to a few questions -

Is it breeding season? It's odd to have a number of Rays come in that may be/are Pregnant.
Have the recent rains trigerred the breeding?
Rays can re-absorb their fetus' if not the best conditions...until what point is this a possibility during gestation?

Jeffers can post pics of his ray if he desires to elaborate, I have pics of when she came in...but, its his ray now...The other 2 came in the following shipment.

Here is the vid of the rays when they arrived (hence the messy water). The first Dark female is the thick girl that remains, the last dark female shown is Bravehrts.

BTW, If someone can embed the Vid, Id appreciate it :)
