Can I put a marbled cat shark in a 125 gallon tank or a calofornia stingray? if not, what is their minimum tank size?

The cat shark would be ok in the 125 for about a year maybe ?

The california ray...I THINK would be ok...But you would probably want something with a wider footprint like a standard 180.

+1 Here.

It is going to depend on the size you are planning on getting to start with. Also, your filtration and other tank mates will play a role.

Could I do a 125 wide that is 4 feet long? would that work?

This question is best posted in the shark area...but I would recommend getting the largest footprint you can afford for rays.

I think that would be better for rays, but still bigger is better like everyone else saying. They spend all their time on the bottom so the height doesn't matter, get the biggest footprint for sure.

A 180 would be much better. The 125 will not be enough if you have live rock in the sand bed as it will provide no swimming space.
