Hello everyone. new Driftwood inventory for March is up:

Also... the importer I buy wood from has added mangrove root to their product line. I do not know the prices or sizes yet, but in my experience mangrove does not look all that great unless the pieces are in the 18 - 30 inch range. They are also usually cut flat on the bottom, and sometimes both top and bottom, so that they sit in the tank vertically to give the look of tree trunks. Is there any interest for mangrove? A lot of people talk about it, but would a 24 inch piece at $60 - $80 be saleable (price is a guess... hopefully it is a high guess)? Here is an image sent to me by my supplier. Scale is hard to determine, but I am guessing that this is a 30" or taller piece... I think that it is exceptional, and smaller pieces would not be as spectacular, but the vertical trunk effect would be about the same.

They are also offering really, really big peices of Malaysian Driftwood in the 5 - 6 foot in length range. They describe them as 'branches' so they are probably long and thin, or logs. They did not send me an image. The price on these big display pieces would be $300 - $400, and I do not think that I would be set up to ship them if I get some... pick up or delivery only. If anyone thinks that they want some pieces of that size let me know. I will probably get a few on my next order, but if there seems to be a demand I will get more than just a couple.

Update on the mangrove possibilities.

Mangrove is going to be ordered. I can get a wide range of sizes at affordable prices. It will be a couple weeks to get it in, but when I do the prices should be about:

medium (12") $12
large (18") $24
XL (22") $45
Show (30") $95
Super Show (50" - 72") $400

Mangrove positives:
- beautiful, vertical branchy look with lots of holes is a network pattern
- some pieces are sprays of smooth branched extending out from a central point
- no tannins (I am told, but I have not had the chance to test it yet)

negatives:
- only about 1/2 the pieces sink without soaking, but they will sink after a couple weeks in water, or can be weighted down.

I have also FINALLY gotten a better shipping rate with UPS, and the savings on shipping has been 20-30%. That means that a 30 pound package that was costing $25 to ship is now averaging $18. I few people in DesMoines went in on an order together and got a great rate of $25 on a 60 pound oversize box. Group ordering is the way to go. If you have a commerical address it can be shipped to the rates are lower still.
