hey guys , iam still in school but iam targetting to become a marine biologist when i grow up . unfortunately my school has no marine biology or any aquatic organism related courses at all . I know this is more of a fish keeping and hobby type forum but i was hoping that you guys could help . thing is i got another 2 more years in school and i was hoping that i could learn as much as i can about fish , crustaceans and the likes on the web . i would appreciate it if somebody could reply with some links or articles . anything really that may help me prepare for the future . and yes i am aware about how much there is to learn but better start now than never :P so ya , i would really like the more experienced people to help me out . thanks in advance ! cheers !

high school or university?

Biology is a good start.

well i am in high school . iam already doing biology as school . but at university i want to do marine biology . and there is very little education on marine biology in high school . so could u please help me by providing a few links or websites or anything that i could study ?

You're going to have to do something generic, either biology or environmental science or something of the like for your BS. From there, you'll be able to go on to get a masters and later a PhD in a more specialized sub field, such as marine biology. The reason for this is that in order to be a marine biologist, you first have to understand everything that there is to know about biology. Once you know that, you go on to learn EVEN MORE in your specialized sub field, which for you would be marine biology.

I am currently pursuing a Bachelors of Environmental Science with a concentration in Fish and Wildlife Management. I have numerous postgraduate degree paths that I can choose at the masters level. My plan is currently to go after Ichthyology, but that's far from set in stone at this point.

FWIW, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics (bls.gov), environmental science is a field with great growth expectations and much better than average median pay.

Finally, I'm going to move this to the Lounge. This isn't really aquarium related after all. :)

You could possibly look into taking an online class with a junior college while your still in high school.

Unfortunately I can't really help with marine biology, I'm an environmental science major! (Well potentially wildlife biology)

well i wouldnt mind if u helped me out with environmental studies too , cuz according to the guy who posted before you , i will have to learn environmental studies first before marine bio . so i wouldn't mind ur help as well in ur field .

okay i get it . just wanted to have a little pre-preparation thats all .

The best thing to do is wait until you get into school before you start trying to learn how to do things.

However:

A basic understanding of cellular structure is a major aspect of biology.

A basic understanding of food webs and trophic levels is very useful in biology.

A basic understanding of mitosis.

Probably the most useful thing to gain a firm understanding of is the format by which your school likes their papers done. I wish, oh god do I wish that I had gained a firm understanding of APA formatting before I had started my school. Oh well, live and learn.

well yah i got those 3 things settled . already learnt about mitosis , food webs and cellular structure at school .

I don't think I could really help you as I don't do any out of class studying and don't have any links or articles to provide. It's really just a matter of getting on google and looking up the basics right now
