Hello fellow MFKers,

I have been looking at ways to deplete Nitrates to reduce the need for my drip. I was thinking, as the blocks of MarinePure are said to help eat Nitrates by creating a low/no oxygen surface inside them. My thought to achieve this was going to be slow flow in a 20L parallel to my sump. The slow flow would eliminate the oxygen and then return back to the sump. Was just going to layer the bottom of the tank with the blocks and have the water go the length of the tank. This is early brainstorming stages and wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts/input.

Cheers.

The concept should work to remove nitrates, though I'm not a fan of de nitrate reactors in freshwater.

In saltwater they are standard, but they also have protein skimmer to remove organics from the water. If you just remove nitrates and do less water changes your water will have more organics and such - eventually getting a nice yellow tint...

If you already have a drip (and thus aren't trying to save the effort of water changes) why bother? How big of a tank are we talking?

It's a ~470 gallon tank. The idea would be to slow down the drip a bit or even alternate weeks when it's ran if it could be done. Again, early stages and just spit balling.

I did some thing similar, with a 2.5 gallon canisters, but dosing carbon, on a fresh water tank. Your 20 long is a good idea, maybe better with a baffle down the middle.

What did you do similar and what/how would you recommend the baffle? Like perpendicular to the water flow so there is a dead spot?

Mostly to keep the water from channeling and leaving dead spots..

Under gravel filterplates, set up for reverse flow.

Seen guys use perforated tubes spread out ever 3 inches.

A center baffle, will effectively double the contact time. If the water travels down and back. Vs just down.

It'd be purely MarinePure in the tank with a slow flowing pump on the opposite side of the inlet.
