Could u use this media effectively in a wet dry filter and swap out my bio balls or would the effectiveness of the media be diminished ? Media would not be submerged but would have water drip down on it from a drip tray

It can be used effectively but imo over time the pores will clog up. While there's probably more surface area than bioballs, all that you have to do is rinse bioballs occasionally to keep them from clogging.

you dont have to rinse them, ive never had problems with it clogging...
i have them in my sumps, balls & bricks...i put them in last right before
the return pump along with the heaters. i also have another pump in
the sump to keep water from becoming stagnate. it's better to use these
fully submerged though imo.

Media type has very little effect on real world filtration efficiency. I don't have data to give you but you can see this yourself. I bet your parameters are fine with the bio balls (even though bio balls don't have much surface area) and your parameters will be just fine if you replace them with some uber expensive media. No real change will occur. Some will argue that you might process waste faster with fancy media. This may be true but not to a noticeable extent even if you were to plot your ammonia spikes. In the end it can't really hurt (except in your wallet) to use fancy media but since we all go overboard on filtration and bio media it is unlikely to really help either.

If you have a car with 1000hp that you use only to drive the speed limit, it will be faster with 1200hp, but it won't get you to work any earlier.

As much as I like the latest and greatest, this is another example of the billions that go into the pet industry.

I'll admit, I too thought about swapping out bio-balls (fully submerged) for Marine Pure blocks. It's been two years, my ammonia and nitrite remain 0 having only cleaned my sump once, not even rinsing the balls as they looked clean. It wasn't worth my time and money.

I'm sure there are better bio media, but bio-balls are old school and field tested tried and true.

I agree with the others. I will admit I swapped out my cheap ceramic rings a few years ago for a bunch of fancy sintered glass stuff (including some marine pure). The only place I saw a difference was in my wallet lol.
