I have seen a wide variety of "living" sand subtrates offered at LFS's and online. Can these be used for freshwater setups? Can crushed coral sand be used in FW tanks?

Crushed coral yes. It will make the water "harder" and possibly increase PH (depending on what tap PH is).
Dont use the "live sand". Gonna be lots of junk you dont want and the "live" parts are just gonna die in FW anyway.
