Update: Nevermind, my fault. I was avoiding moving the handles too far back because I thought I'd break them but apparently that's what I needed to do.
After trying to fix my old filter (with off and on success) i just bought a new Marineland filter and this is going to sound ridiculous but I can't the lid off of the thing! I thought removing a couple screws connected to the top was what I had to do but I still can't get in there.
