Hi, I bought a new filter about 3 months ago, It started making a sqeeking sound about two weeks ago. Every time I do a water change I see a little bit of sand in the fiter, I tried cleaning it out real good but can't get it to stop making the squeeking noise. I think theirs sand inside it!!!! So i went to the store and bought a new one, I'm hoping I don't have to do this every 3-4 months. Anybody have any solutions???? Thanks....

Put spounge filter over filter inlet or switch to a canister most all hob filters have that problem with sand i have been through several myself that way. Have you pulled the filter off the tank and sprayed it out if not try that. You could also shorten your filter inlet so as not so much chance to pick up sand cause it destroys the magnet on the mag drive and impeller. You can get replacement parts too.

Turn filter off during water change. Sounds like ur kicking up sand and the filter is grabbing it. Let sand settle before turning back on. For the noise, i have takin my impellers out of mine and put a lite coat of vaseline on the black magnet part. Some say not to use vaseline but i have had no problems at all. Make sure there is no sand where impeller sits.

Which model Marineland filter did you purchase?

If you are getting sand in the filter, you either need to raise the intake strainer higher or install a pre-filter sponge on the intake screen.

Thanks for all the replys!!! I do turn off my filter and take it out when I do water changes. Every other week I move the sand around and gets real cloudy, I'll try to wait till the sand settles first before I put the filter back in. I'm going to get a filter sponge and raise my intake strainer cause it's real low and I noticed when my fish are digging underneath the rocks their kicking sand right at the intake screen. I think my problem is solved!!!! LOL... Thanks a lot everybody...

I'de check the impeller... I had one that made a grinding sound. Not sure exactly what got into it but the metal shaft started to disintegrate and caused the noise.. May be as simple as replacing the impeller. But I would def use a pre filter sponge ( also saves alot on replacement cartridges).
