I have a marineland heater on my 56g tank. But it seems to either be broken or my ambient temp is off too much.

When I did a water change, I noticed that my water temp was at around 74 degrees F. But my heater is set to 79 degrees F, and when I move it or turn it 90 degrees on its suction cup attachments, the water heats up to what it is set at, and a day later, it is back down to 74 degrees.

Is my heater broken?

I am having the same problem with 2 300watt marineland visitherm heathers. If they are both set to 89 degrees F the water temp will only go to 77 and then they shut off. Is that the same heater as you've got?

I am actually on heater 3 and 4 as i sent the first 2 i had back, but the new ones are doing the same thing.

it is a marineland visitherm heater. i think mine is 200 watts or so.

they seem to be doing something similar. the only thing im glad about is that they keep the water around 74F, and dont let it go below that. but when i got my hand in the tank and i touch the heater, it feels like its running already (or has been/is). but the water isnt at 79F like its set on.

When i first got the heater it was great, but not so much anymore.

If you set the heater at 79, and check your water temperature with another thermometer, if it's below 79 (maybe below 77 if there was a 2 degree differential which would be ok) and the heater has turned off before it reached 79, the heater is defective. I will never buy another marineland heater.
