Hey all,

Got a question about market shrimp. What exactly is it? Frozen uncooked shrimp? Unfrozen shrimp? Does it matter too much? The only reason I ask is the only seafood store where I can get shrimp thats not frozen is quite a ways away, whereas i can pick up frozen shrimp at krogers right around the corner... I remember seeing something about freezing shrimp removing some of the nutrients but was wondering if it made that much of a difference.

Also, I want to start thawing my frozen bloodworms overnight in a dixie cup of conditioned water with vitamins. Anyone have any good vitamin recommendations? Target fish will be bichirs for the most part.

Thanks

Market shrimp is referring to frozen shrimp from the grocery store. I buy mine at an Asian store...nice big prawns for only $2.99/lb. I just thaw out a few when I need them. For smaller fish, you'll need to cut them into smaller pieces with scissors.

Regarding vitamins, I don't use them. Keeping your fish on a high quality pellet diet should give them the vitamins they need imo.

Thanks for the info, thats what I thought. My juvy bichir eats twice a day, mainly eating wardley shrimp pellets. Every other day his first feeding is bloodworms. I just want to give him the best i can in terms of vitamins. The bugger loves his bloodworms...

yeah markit shrimp are just regular cooked or uncooked fresh or saltwater shrimp. i feed those to my oscars, balas and eel as a treat.

as for vitamins you can use garlic extreme, vita chem, seachem nourish...
but i agree with balon.. keep your fish on high grade pellot or flake food and theyll get all their necessary vitamins :D

Hmmm, should i switch over to a small mm sinking carnivore (hikari or kens) pellet instead of my wardley's shrimp pellets?

Go with both, shrimp pellets and Hikari carnivore pellets or Massivore along with market shrimp or krill or whatever else you can afford. Variety is good. What kind of poly do you have?

A senegal right now. But I'm going to start a gar/bichir collection once i finally get my 180...

Reason I don't like the wardley pellets is they break up rather easily and my bichir makes a complete mess eating them.

Then you'll love the Hikari carnivore pellets or go with New Life Spectrum 3mm sinking pellets. Wardley's is really low grade.

Don't think my LFS carries hikari carnivore, would have to order online. What type of NLS? Cichlid formula?

That would be fine. I think most NLS are actually the same ingredients. Don't buy anything at your lfs....ordering online, you usually pay about 1/3 to 1/2 what the lfs charges, even factoring in shipping.
