Wonderful!

The state of Maryland has just closed rockfish (striped bass) season due to poachers. Ten TONS of the hottest prime game fish in the Chesapeake Bay gone in days!

Solution: Ban recreational fishing for those like myself and allow the commercial fishing industry to abolish the local fisheries.

I'll bet that every snakehead in Maryland waters combined has not "destroyed" 1/1000th of the game fish stock in the decade + habitation of Maryland waters than the commercial poachers do EVERY SINGLE DAY!

I guess I am a little less ticked off at the DNR demanding that we recreational fisherman take full responsibility for culling the Maryland waterways of snakehead population. Since they have banned all of us from fishing for the premiere game fish in the state, (Stripped Bass) accidentally "CATCHING" a snakehead is no longer applicable!

The poachers will no doubt not get in any trouble (as is always the case with the commercial fishing industry! The will probably use the mandatory Maryland Snakehead cull law as an excuse for this carnage. I could have sworn that those ten tons of fish in out nets were snakeheads for Pete’s sake! So we mis-identified these little striped bass as the horrible snakehead and killed em all like we're suppose to! We aren't experts on snakeheads and were just attempting to "save" the bay!

Probably get a congressional medal of honor!

Maybe we should consider cut/ bleed out of poachers and study the snakehead to see how its new habitation pans out!

Yeah there was no reason that they could not have released the netted fish back into the water. Greed ruins everything.

This argument i have to agree on, these poachers need a bigger punishment then what they get. Most of the fish wind up freezer burnt anyways.....

I'm a newbie fish keeper (under 2 years), but a lifelong fisherman. Fishing is a hobby, release, total stress free, fun that I so desire. I have also however grown extremely fond of my Bowfins and Gars for sure. I was fuming more about Bowfin being mistaken by non-experts :screwy:(average joe 6-pack recreational fisherman) and culled as snakeheads.

Again, this is the main issue that I have here. A fisherman should be able to properly ID the game fish that they are baiting and be able to measure the catch assuring legal size limit. Keep the legal sized target game fish and everything else is a throwback! Since most local fishermen are NOT Marine Biologist, (expert types) requiring positive ID and taking immediate terminal action as a result of your non-expert positive ID seems extremely risky at absolute minimum. Heck, add into the mix that 6-pack and find that a fisherman lops his ding-a-ling off thinking he was culling a snakehead! Leave it to the experts, don't hand Joe 6-pack a free pass to "kill" a fish that they can not properly ID.

Im sorry screamin...but it seems to me that you have issues with your states DNR. I believe they are correct in stopping the season because they want to protect the striped bass in Chesapeake bay from becoming like the Blue walleye (although I do agree about them prosecuting poachers I not have seen or heard any good evidence that they are not doing that already) . Ive seen online that both the Maryland and Virginia Dnrs have posters up on the differences between the Snakehead and Bowfin fish, I once again think they have spent alot of money on educating the public on the difference and that most fisherman can tell the difference by now. Once again this was my reasoning for the laws for killing this invasive "1st of all Trout and Bass are responsible for the endangerment and extinction of many species after being introduced into non-native habitats in the West. 2nd of all Hawaii is a different ecosystem and they were introduced so long ago that no one knowes for sure if they did wipe out any native species. Last but not least we have alot of endangered native fish in the US, Snakehead are a much more aggressive and deadly efficient predator than Bass are (just like Dorado or Gatfs) and these DNR's are trying to save rare or endangered species like Roanoke Bass, Mud Sunfish, and Blackbanded Sunfish (not to mention the Bluespotted and Bandeds that would be eaten like a fat boy on a Cannibal Cruise line by SH). IF you truely love fish you will understand the DNR's plight to try and save these species ( that are natural treasures) which have already taken a hit from other introduced species. Too many people who post on here are worried only about losing money from sales of these fish and not about the ecosystems they wreck. "

Warmouth, you are missing the point. Maryland has not "stopped" stripped bass from being removed from the bay LITERALLY BY THE TONAGE! They have ONLY stopped the RECREATIONAL FISHERMAN from taking one or two stripped bass (per trip)!

The Commercial fishing of the Sripped Bass in Maryland waters WILL continue. You WILL still be able to lumber your fat arse and all four chins into the local supermarkets and buy all of the fresh local caught Stripped Bass that your obeise tail is far too lazy to get out on the water and catch yourself.

Hey, if you agree that it is a "good" idea to stop every recreational fisherman from taking one or two stripped bass per trip, and STILL ALLOW commercial fisherman to take TONS of Stripped bass from Maryland waters EVERY SINGLE DAY, that is your right! Please do not be deluded into thinking that it is actually helping the fishery!

If I am wrong and it becomes a complete and total MORITORIUM of Stripped Bass (like it was in Maryland Waters for over a decade in the 80's) and we DO NOT allow for comercial fishing of this "endangered species" for the culinary delight of the most obeise peoples on G's green earth, then I am OK with the stoppage.

At this point it is ONLY the recreational fisherman who are being affected by the COMMERCIAL POACHERS heinous actions. Why would you AT LEAST not want the fishing stoppage to apply to them?

If you haven't noticed, it almost seems that this is a modern equillivant of the witch hunts for pete's sake! Every time that there is an "issue" in MD. waters it is the recreational fisherman that take the "punishment" for the crime regardless of the culprit!

IMO, we (human species) can farm raise enough fish to supply the entire human population of earth with a readily available supply of delicious/ nutricious food. Personally I disagree with ANY "exotic" fish being removed from American waters by Commercial fishermen. If you are too lazy to go out and actually rod and reel catch these exotics (like stripped bass), then you should not eat them and be happy with the COMMERCIALLY FARM RAISED species of fish available in the local markets!

This is SO true! I was kind of throwing this out there to get fishkeepers & fishermens from other states in the continental US oppinion of the MD. DNR vs. their own states DNR.

I have yet to hear a single responce that any others states DNR does similar "less that 100% on the up and up" bologna that ours does. If your state does, please post!

The oil spill in the gulf totally sucked, and BOY did I feel for those fisherman who's lives got turned upside down by the calousness of the greedy BP oil giant. It is my understanding though that at least the state of Louisiana had the decency of banning fishing in the area to BOTH commercial as well as recreational fisherman! That is far fairer that Marylands garbage approach to EVERYTHING.

The commercial fishery is closed, as it should be due to recent poaching events. But is the recreational fishery closed as well?
