Second time this happens...

I went to do a routine water change in my community tank, and put in my 24 hour aged water. 30 seconds after I put in the water, three danios go into convulsions, and die. When I came back from feeding them to my oscars, two of my bala shark are dead as well. These bala sharks are the mystery. They have survived a long time, and have been through every situation imaginable. Still, they aren't that old. The funny thing is that my little neon tetras are all okay. This is the second time in a few years, by the way. What do you think happened? Temperature shock? Water was pretty much the same temp. It was brand new water, so no bad chemicals. Tested it afterwards to make sure. Sigh, now I have one lonely bala shark.

Something similar happened to Oddball after an unauthorized dig contaminated the water main. Only he lost about $3000 worth of fish. :(

Test the fill water for ammonia and chloramines. Add some dechlor to fresh tap water and see if there is any ammonia left in it. If there is, then there was some contamination in the lines. Water companies add it after contamination because it is a more powerful dissinfectant. Unfortunately, it also holds the chlorine in the water much longer. It acts like stabilizer in a swimming pool (exact same concept).

This is one of the reasons that..in spite of the cost... I run an RO/DI system for all of our tank water..not to mention...drinking water. Something could have been in the water main and normal tank testing wont show that...(TDS testing will show elevated levels but wont tell you exactly whats in the water.) additionally something could have been in the seasoning tank or even in the air. Stories like this one are why I cringe when ever I hear people talking about using streight tap water for water changes...

The...So far so good...school of thaught frightens me.

I keep aged water covered. I test it before adding it into tanks. I wonder why my other fish were fine though? I still have 11 danios, a bunch of tetras, etc. They are just like before

no, of course I treat the water.

It was a good link, but I quarantine all my fish 2 weeks. No fish had been in that tank less than 2 months
