I went to the zoo sunday with my family and spent the whole time bouncing around waiting to go see the Amazonia exhibit. When i finally got their i was astounded to see the beautiful stingrays and arrowana in the open water tank. Next to that were 3 huge arapaima,2 huge red tails, a large niger and a number of pacus. The tank next to that had a large number of other fish.
This was my favorite exhibit.
I was sadden when i found out the news that several stingrays had died in the exhibit. Sunday night, after we left, sometime between closing at 6pm on sunday and opening at 7am on monday 11 stingrays a the 2 arrowana in the stingray exhibit died. Testing showed low levels of oxygen in the water. I beleieve their were 7 surviving female rays in the tank. The zoo does have 3 other males which are kept seperate, they are hoping that with the help of these males they will be able to reestablish their stingray population.
