Mata Mata turtles???

I have heard that Mata Mata turtles are illegal in California.. can anyone confirm that? they are really bazard looking turtles

I used to work in a pet sotre where we had a couple. They weren't for sale. I think a permit is required to have one of these guys.

I just searched every CA DNR reference to reptiles and turtles. I can't find a single mention of matamata turtles.

I saw one of them in a local pet shop. It was probly almost 24 inches in diameter, and they were keeping it in a tank that was only about 30 by 30. They said it didn't need a tank any bigger, but my gut told me they were being pretty cruel. Were they right? Don't know much bout them.

30 x 30 doesn't sound cruel, because they are sit and wait predators but a bigger tank would look nicer.
