Matala K1 moving bed filter diy

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The space is 2'x2'x6"
I already put about a gallon of micro & regular size K1.
Was thinking have a bed of marinepure spheres since there will be flow down there!

This K3 media is on Amazon for 2 gallons for $30.
Is it better than K1? I have a mix now of K1 & K1 micro seems to be tumbling good.
Some got out underneath the matala so not all smooth sailing 😁😐

Why these K1, K3 versus old school bio balls?
price?
efficiency?
curious…
The K1 tumbling around becomes a moving bed filter!
I'm still debating if it's all worth it!

As amazontank amazontank stated puffers4puffers puffers4puffers , k1 is the "go to" filter media for fluidize bed filters in a home aquarium setting however the key thing here is the "fluidize" part.

A fluidize bed filter is hands down the most efficient system at maximizing the number of beneficial (nitrifying for 99.99% of fishkeepers; in theory denitrification can also be done but I would never risk or suggest another user risk doing it) bacteria within a certain constricted space (sumps, pressurized containers used for filters, etc.). This is due to two factors: using a light weight media with relatively large surface area and forcing air through/around the media causing it to "tumble"/move into each other. As a result the biofilm, essentially the home of the nitrifying bacteria, is forcefully culled as the media crash into each other leaving only the healthiest colonies to survive on the media. Direct air/02 is also used instead of just wave makers or other gases because the chemical process of nitrification requires 02 meaning the bacteria also require a large amount of oxygen to survive.

The only other media that is better than k1in a fluidize bed filter, as far as I know, is sand. Unfortunately getting sand to fluidize without clogging up equipment typically requires a pressurized system setup which is more trouble than most aquarist are willing to handle in a DIY situation. This is also how most pool filters work so if you have the money consider buying one of these for your home aquarium if you don't want to run a fluidize bed within a sump.
