Matrix filter media question

I was wondering if anyone has used matrix I have a Eheim 2217 that I was thinking of using it in on my 75g mixed tank ATM it filter has A few bio balls and air conditioner filter pad in it

I use it and the Pond version in every setup. Good stuff, but as long as you provide surface area they all work well.

Substrat Pro, Biomax, Bio chem stars....all have an application in my tanks too...

Does it filter everything out two or should I put something on top of it to stop the stuff that passes through

I use sponges/socks before it for mechanical
