Max flow through a 45 gallon sump?

Im making a sump out of a 45 gallon long. It will be put on my 240 with a fx5. I was looking a getting a return pump that was rated at about 1500-1800 gallons per hour and a over flow box that was rated to 1500 gallons per hour. Do yall think this flow will be to fast for that small of a sump?
 
The overflow box should be rated for more than the pump, or else you will have to restrict the pump somehow. If it were me, I might go with 2 of those overflow boxes just to be safe. Or a smaller pump... Sump size should be fine.
 
I am running a mag18 and a mag7 innna 40G breeder sump/ fuge using two 1" overflows. The mag18 was not giving me enough flow to satisify my overflows. The flow is just fine for that size tank.

You want more overflow than pump but not by much, you can always tee off the supply back to the sump any more than the drains can handle.
 
the box will be rated for more than the Pump when the head is accounted for. the pump will be climbing 6 feet to the top of the tank. that should put the pump at some where between 1200-1400 gph, am i right?

so you have around 2500 gph going thought it? What size tank is it on?
 
After 5' head I am guessing around 1600 or less gph. This sump/ fuge is under a 210G tank and both valves on the drains are closed 45°. Planning on swapping out both pumps for (1) mag24 which should push around 1800gph @ 5' head. You can always divert back to the sump any flow above what your drains can handle. I bought the mag18 since theory states that (2) 1" overflows would handle 600 gph each. Like a lot of others have done I undersized my pump and needed to add another to increase flow and quiet down the drains.

A 45G sump should have no problems handeling the flow you are trying to achieve. It all really depends on what type of mech filtration you intend to use. I was using polyfiber in a tupperware style driptray, got water so clear it looked like the fish were floating in air. Had to swap out the material every other day for a good rinse, too much maintenance. I switched over to a large filter sock and swap out midweek. Less maintenance and the water collumn is still acceptable. YMMV
 
Gots a Question!

If the overflow is greater than the pump can pump back to the tank which it seems that most say to do then how does the overflow regain the syphon once it has been broken and waiting for the pump to catch up? There should be some sort of dead time for the overflow where the pump is catching up with the greater flow via overflow. the sump would kinda flux up and down given the overflow will provide more water the levels int eh sump go up and tank go down Syphon is broken and pump works to get the sump water back to the tank.
After the syphon is broken and the pump has caught up what starts the syphon again to ensure no pump gets burnt up?
 
There are a few different style overflow boxes that maintain a tank level in the weir. You need to see them to get a better understanding how they work.

I use a durso type overflow in a drilled tank, the weir maintains a constant tank level and the level in the overflow box lowers according to the height I set the durso at and how much I open the valves on the drains.
