I am considering going to a fish store about 1hr and 30 minutes from my house. I was wondering what the max time is for fish to travel safely in a bag from LFS. I know that they survive the shipping of ordering online, but I pretty sure they use pure oxygen, I doubt this place will.

Normally if you tell them you have a long travel they will add more water or something so they will survive the trip. But depending on the fish I think it should be fine. This is my opinion but I am not expert.

Less is more actually.. I have a few customers and I will go as far as 2 hours from my place to get fish as well.. 1/4 the bag water. just tie it up good. I also like to pack the bags in syrafoam ( just like they're shipped to the LFS) It's dark to keep the fish calm and keeps temp swings from happening. Double bag loaches and plecos.. A standarded bagged fish can last hours in a bag as long as it's not being poked at or exposed to severe temp changes. A shot of Ammonia Detox chems never hurts for particulalry messy fish. But I avoid other chems.

I transported a 28" ID shark 400 some miles and he was perfectly fine. I also picked up a GG and niger catfish from a lfs about 2.5hrs from me that where in bags and did fine.

Good to know, thanks guys.

Thats exactly how far a really nice LFS is from me (rather than the closer one) and ive bought many fish about an hour and a half away. Fish should be fine...

i just transferred an angel and baby ornate 3 hours yesterday, didnt mess with leaving em in the bag just brought prime and a 5 gal bucket with me along with a battery power air pump and all went well

I've been bagging fish for people for 10 years, an hour and a half should be no prob, assuming things are done correctly, like a properly sized bag, not too crowded, 1/3 water with 2/3 air, etc. If they have oxygen, they could last many times that. Remember, fish that are imported are in the bags for 24-48 hours. Couple tips...

-Keep em dark, like in a cooler. Makes the fish's metabolism slow down and reduces stress and breathing.

-Don't ask to see them eat. I know everyone says you should, and it's good advice in theory, but stressed fish will throw up in the bag, which can quickly kill.

I've done a 3 hour trip which turned into 5 due to a car accident. I had an oscar, knifefish, pleco, and saltwater clownfish, crabs, and shrimp. Everything was completely fine.

I never thought about the darkness, but that makes perfect since now that you guys mentioned it. I have lost a few fish in my 30 minute drive to petsmart, but when I drive 45+mins to an actual fish store who puts the bags inside a brown paper bag I have never had a problem. Thanks again, looks like I was worried about nothing. Side note: my 1.5hr drive is to "that fish place"/"that pet place" in lancaster PA. Any body been there? If so are they worth the drive?
