Now im just curious to see other peoples opinions on this. What would be the absolute maximum volume of water for only 1 fx5? I know a lot of people say 80, 100, 125, etc and even the bo of the fx5 says "up to 400 gal".... Yeah right, but lets hear your opinions

I'd probably use one on my 135g but anything larger would need additional filters. I had two of them on my 180 and that worked great.

It depends on the stock volume. The limit of a filter is the quantity of biomedia contained. If one FX5 can handle the bioload of a specific stock but water circulation is not sufficient to maintain the biological params, then it would be cheaper to add powerheads instead of a second fX5.

One could clean 400 gallons in my opinion if you clean it twice a week and had other water flow in the tank to push the crap to the filter. I think no matter what extra flow sure I nice in all and any tank.

I have 1 on my 90gal including ac110, but my fish are extremely messy, 5 medium sized rbp, its enough mechanical filtration to the point I don't even have to vac at all and it stays clean, although thats no substitute for wc, so 1x 60-70% per 5-6 days are necessary for lower nitrate levels (20-40ppm) max.

Bio filtration is still great with the fx5 media capacity at 1.5 gallons, which is full of bio media and 10x apprx turnover rate.

id say Atleast 1 for every 100 gals unless ur at max capacity in which case more filtration and more wc are needed. this does not include hob or added filtration.

Bingo. A single FX5 could easily filter a 600g if it was [very] lightly stocked, but might not be enough for a 100g if its crammed full of messy fish.

My favorite is to run one with sump also. But I have one running on a 55 gallon breeder over stocked that I clean monthly.
